About My Green Side

Wendy Gabriel created My Green Side in September of 2007 as a way to remind herself, while hoping to educate others, on how to live thoughtfully and responsibly for our children, ourselves and our planet. The journey she is on has opened her eyes to many simple things we can do to make a big difference in the world around us and in our own homes.

Wendy is a freelance eco-writer now based in Fresno, California. Wendy and her work has been featured in numerous publications and websites including the Chicago Sun-Times, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Fox Business News and Mashable.com. For nearly six years, she was a weekly contributor on a popular radio talk show in the Upper Midwest with a segment titled “Simple Tips for Green Living.” Wendy is an avid recycler, rainwater harvester, composter, thrifter and was instrumental in coordinating the planning and creation of a large mural made with recycled materials at a local elementary school in Fargo, North Dakota. She was also a part of the driving force behind starting a school garden program implemented at several Fargo schools.

Wendy has gone from the freezer (Fargo) to the furnace (Fresno) and could not be happier exploring California with the loves of her life, her husband and two daughters.

Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning. ~Albert Einstein

Waste not, want not: Compost creates better soil, keeps waste out of landfill

Our company has just engineered and innovated the first biodegradable paper jar for our certified organic creams. They’re compostable down to the label adhesive and glaze. It’s the ultimate green package – great for the skin (USDA Certified Organic) and great for the environment. When empty, compost in your garden. We’re not taking out a patent, but instead leaving the field open for other companies to follow our lead and reduce the plastic overload.

I want to introduce myself…..My name is Ben Fairfield and I am one of the founders of The Urban Garden Project™. The Urban Garden Project™ is the initiative to encourage Americans to learn from history, become more self-reliant, save a significant amount of money, and eat healthier, all as a result of planting their own urban garden! The goal of The Urban Garden Project™ is to encourage and catalogue the creation of 100,000 urban gardens by 2020. We know that this is a sizeable goal, but we will accomplish it 1 garden at a time!

As a result of your successful blog and your obvious passion for gardening I was hoping that you would visit our website at http://www.urbangardenproject.wordpress.com to learn more about the project. It costs nothing to support the project; we simply need help getting the word out to the world so that we can begin to catalog existing or new urban gardens. It would also be great to be able to add you to our garden catalog and link to your site through our blogroll! The official kick off for the project is April 1st 2009 and we are busy creating videos, tutorials, product reviews and more to make visiting worth everyone’s time!

I am hoping that as a result of our shared passion for gardening you can help us in spreading the word about The Urban Garden Project™. Again, your support costs nothing. Our mission is pure and we hope that you can come along side us in this project to grow the gardening community and the number of urban gardens!

Thank you so much for your time and we are looking forward to you visiting our site and letting us add your garden to our growing catalog of gardens from across the world!

    Have a great day!

    Ben Fairfield

    Wendy:

You’re a woman with a family after my own heart. My husband, Trent, and I left our full-time jobs in high tech to start Surf City Growers in 2005, and have since launched My First Organics seed starting kits, which is all about teaching families, through a simple, hands-on activity, the benefits of organic gardening and produce.

As you know, the economy is forcing households to cut variable costs, and organic gardening saves hundreds of dollars in groceries, travel and entertainment expenses. It is proving to be an inexpensive way for families to spend time together outside, being active in nature and away from the distraction of cell phones, video games, and television. Together, they yield nutritious, organic produce – the cost of which is out of reach for most Americans. In fact, a $15 kit harvests up to $250 worth of produce.

We have several exciting Earth Day announcements to share; below are the headlines. I’d be happy to provide you the releases in advance of April 22 if you’re interested in learning more.

Households turn to gardening to reduce expenses and reconnect with nature, family

How Organic Gardens Save the Earth
Free e-coloring book educates families on the benefits of organic produce

Organic Nursery Launches Countywide Green Fundraiser for Public Schools
Internet campaign aims to aid budget shortage affecting childhood education in Santa Cruz County

We’ve taken our cue from the First Lady when she said “that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities.” That’s what My First Organics is all about.

Thanks for your consideration. We hope to hear from you soon.

I came across your blog and was hoping you could help me out. Since October is Energy Awareness month, I am wondering if you could mention an initiative from Minnesota Energy Resources, a natural gas utility serving parts of Minnesota.

They are offering FREE, Niagara Conservation low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators to their customers to encourage energy efficiency and water conservation. Not only can they save a single household up to 25,000 gallons of water per year, they can reduce your water heating costs by 15% or more.

Customers can simply go online and order these: https://shop.niagaraconservation.com/mercfreekit/

Please let me know if you could make mention of this in an upcoming post.

I appreciate your help in spreading the word about energy efficiency and water conservation.

    Regards, Nikki
