Ah, the giddy excitement I get at picking a new critter for my Saturday post. I know, I am a goober! That’s rightThe goddesses "finding" the Mystery Critter kids, it’s time to play Mystery Critter. A time when we get together to learn more about wildlife and have a bit of fun in the process!

Thinking caps on? I keep wanting to raise the stakes a little — I think you might be getting too good at solving these! OK — here we go. And remember — no cheating!

CRITTER CLUES:

  • I am found throughout most of North America;
  • My habitat is wide-ranging — from cities to meadows;
  • I live year round in Hawaii (Aloha!) and Southern California;
  • I’m a bit sluggish in winter; and
  • I have one of the coolest wildlife stories out there!

Fun wildlife facts. Check. Desire to stump my readers. Double check. Must be Why did the chickens cross the road?Saturday! That’s right kids, it’s time to play Mystery Critter. Let’s have some fun with my little game to test your wildlife knowledge and inspire you to find the wild in your world.

Put on those thinking caps and let’s get to it. It’s Week #15 in the series — your nature detective skills must be getting quite impressive about now. Let’s see if you are “smarter than the average bear!” And remember — no cheating!

CRITTER CLUES:

  • My body-type is the only of its kind in North America;
  • My preferred habitat has sandy soil;
  • I range throughout much of the south east of the USA;
  • I have 4 young per year, and an amazing reproduction process; and
  • I enjoy insects, crayfish, eggs, and carrion.

While it is not as widespread as many species, this Mystery Critter ranks as one of the coolest in the animal kingdom in my book (read: one of my personal faves!). Fascinating and comical, they are a sight to see! Even of you don’t spot today’s critter, Mother Nature has something fun for you to discover right outside your front door. So grab the kids or a pair of binoculars if you have them, and go take a look.

It’s Saturday, which means on thing around here — time to play Mystery Critter — a little Big spider with Baby Greek goddessgame to test your wildlife knowledge and inspire you to find the wild in your world. And let me give you a hint: the answer is NOT Yogi Bear (although, who doesn’t love a pic-a-nic basket?!).

So, are you ready, my wildlife detectives? Put on those thinking caps and let’s get to it. Let’s see if you are “smarter than the average bear!” And remember — no cheating!

CRITTER CLUES:

  • I hibernate;
  • My habitat is yards, woodlands, and forest edges;
  • I eat seeds, vegetation, slugs, nuts, and carrion;
  • I have 3-5 young per year; and
  • I (or one of my “cousins”) am found throughout the country and in Canada.

Odds are you have seen this Mystery Critter before. They are a favorite of kids and kids-at-heart, alike. But you gotta be quick! Grab the kids and a pair of binoculars and get out there!
